Bed Bug Heat Treatments
Bed bugs have made a dramatic comeback in the last 20 years. In fact, it is so bad that Dr. Michael Potter, a University of Kentucky entomologist, recently stated, "Bed bugs are just going ballistic everywhere. It is going to really rock this country." To make matters worse, pesticides that were once used to keep them under control have since been banned leaving very few effective options.
Heat is the most efficent method of eradicating bed bugs. Heat has been shown in one study to eliminate the entire life cycle, from eggs to adult, in 20 minutes with temperatures holding steady at 118.4 degrees Fahrenheit. Temperatures at 122 degrees proved even more effective. Also, bed bugs have shown the ability to adapt to gradual heat increases. This indicates that temperatures should be brought up rapidly (1).
